Gussie O. Jackson

Gussie O. Jackson was born May 26, 1912 in Abbeville, Louisiana and had been a resident of Birmingham for 57 years. She was the daughter of the late Bayard M. “D.D.” O’Bryan and the former Alice Dxavidson of Abbeville.

She was preceded in death by her husbands, Raymond K. Nelson and Garland M. Jackson; parents; five brothers, Freddie O’Bryan, Clarence O’Bryan, Alexander I’Bryan, Charles O’Bryan and Marshall O’Bryan; three sisters, Irma O’Bryan ledet, Fannie O’Bryan, and Grace O’Bryan Duhon; and two granddaughters, Tanya Lynn Andrus and Theresa Mitchell Andrus.

Survivors include two sons, William “Bill” Andrus (Martha) and Francis H. Andrus Jr. (Ruth Anne); daughter, Jere Andrus Roberts (William Ddale); grandchildren, William Blake Andrus, Francis Wayne Andrus, Vincent (Julissa) Andrus, Linda Gail Hix (Wayne), and Deirdre Ann Davis-McCollum (Frank); and great grandchildren, Jarrod, Cameron, and Allison Hix and Piper Pliska-McCollum; and one sister, Vesta Mae O’Bryan Johnson Black.

Gussie was a faithful member of Valleydale Baptist Church. She not only shared her strong beliefs and opinions, she also shared the fruits of her garden with family, friends and neighbors. She will be remembered by her family and friends as a woman with a smile on her face and a sparkle in her eye.

Funeral services will be held Sunday, June 1, 2008 at 3 p.m. at Ridout’s Elmwood Chapel with visitation one hour prior and burial to follow in Elmwood Cemetery. Ridout’s Elmwood Chapel Directing.
