Heritage Manor News: A forgiving heart

(Editor’s Note: The following article was submitted by Janice Hardy, resident activity director at Heritage Manor Nursing Home in Ville Platte. This column runs every Sunday in The Gazette.)

Has someone you are acquainted with recently made you so mad you feel as though your blood is boiling? If so, you may want to let it go. A recent study indicates having a forgiving heart can lower blood pressure and your heart rate. Choosing to forgive reduces anger, depression and anxiety, which in turn, reduces occurrences of cardiac problems. But, forgiveness doesn’t always come easy.

Ways to help with forgiveness include:

Try to remember the hurt objectively.

Try to understand the other person’s perspective and feel compassion.

Realize we are all alike in that we have all hurt others too.

When we forgive, we feel a sense of freedom and gratitude. Forgive publicly, say it out loud or write it down in a letter. Remind yourself often you have forgiven that person.
