BASILE -- If you asked any coach coming out of college what would be there dream job, a huge majority of them would tell you that it would be to become the head football coach at their alma mater.
For coach Kevin Bertrand, that dream is a reality.
The Basile High graduate is living the dream, leading his former high school on the field of play.
Bertrand came to Basile last season as the head coach after his brother Tony stepped down to become the principal at the school.
Bertrand is no stranger to the coaching profession, having done stints in Jennings and most recently Kinder.
But it is here in Basile that Bertrand feels most at ease.
“It is an amazing feeling to be able to coach here in my hometown,” said Bertrand. “I love the kids, the fans and the atmosphere in this town. The people are so supportive of the program and the coaches, it makes it nice to come to work everyday.”
That feeling has translated to the success of the program under Bertrand the last two years.
The Bearcats have one district championship and two quarterfinal appearances under the leadership of Bertrand.
During that two-year span, the Basile is an incredible 20-4 overall.
However, Bertrand deflects the tremadous success his team has had over the past two seasons to the entire coaching staff and his players.
“The program has been in great condition for a long time,” stated Bertrand. “I contribute that to the coaching staff that has been here. The continuity of this staff is a driving force behind why Basile has been so successful. I consider myself the new guy.”
“The players work so hard for us and for themselves,” continued Bertrand. “It is a tribute to the players that they continue to want to be the best and not to be the team that does not bring home a winning season. I am just so blessed to have the ability to coach these guys and watch them grow as players and people.”
