LEBEAU – A miscommunication between Basile and North Central on the date of their opening district contest did not slow down the Bearcats, as they blew past the Hurricanes 34-0 here Thursday night.
The game between the two teams was slated for Friday night; at least that was what Basile thought. But, the game was moved to Thursday because of the availability of referees.
Coach Kevin Bertrand and the Bearcats did not find out until Tuesday that date of the game had been changed.
“I was on the phone with the head coach from North Central Tuesday and it came up in conversation,” said Bertrand. “Thank God we found out. We had to scramble to get everything ready for a Thursday game.”
However, getting such a late start did not deter the Bearcats offensively or defensively. Basile churned up 449 yards of offense and held North Central to only 100 yards the entire night.
Basile scored three times in the first quarter alone. Senior running back Gabe Fontenot, who finished with 214 yards on 17 carries, scored the first two touchdowns of the night. Fontenot scampered over the goal line from 17 and 26 yards out respectively.
Tray David added the first extra point, but missed on the second, giving Basile the early 14-0 lead.
Rashawn Murphy caught a 60-yard touchdown pass from David for the third score of the opening period. David was true once again and the Bearcats were comfortably ahead 20-0.
The Bearcats did not score again until the fourth quarter. David connected with Jaylon Thomas for a 20-yard scoring pass and Jarred Belled added the final touchdown on a 40-yard run.
Jacob Guillory tacked on both extra points and Basile had now put the game away at 34-0.
David finished the game two for five for 80 yards and two touchdowns through the air. Belle added another 130 yards on the ground.
Basile will now host Westminster Thursday night in another district 5-1A contest.
