Basile dominates District 4-1A group

When you go 10-0 through your regular season schedule and make it to the Class 1A quarter-finals, it’s safe to say you dominated your football season. Basile not only went 10-0 and made it to the quarter-finals, but also won the outright District 4-1A championship. In league play, only Oberlin gave Basile a run for its money. Besides that, the Bearcats had their way with their league competition.
When the All-District 4-1A football team was selected, BSH Head Coach Tony Bertrand knew they would have selections based on the way the team played, but who could have predicted the honors bestowed upon his team when the league coaches voted.
Kendrick Ceaser ran for 1,546 yards and he scored 25 touchdowns. The speedy junior gave Basile a scoring threat from anywhere on the field. Since he was a freshman, he was overcoming opposing defenses and this year was no different. He was named the Offensive Most Valuable Player for the league. Look for him to have another superb year in 2014.
Joining Ceaser on offense is senior offensive linemen Logan Cormier and Jude Johnson. Cormier, a senior, will be hard to replace next season, but look for Johnson, a junior, to be the cornerstone of the O-line. Senior Mason Deshotel earned a spot as a wide receiver. Deshotel was much more than a wide receiver for Basile. He played multiple spots on offense, to include tight end and running back. As a wide-out, he hauled in 27 catches in 2013 and gobbled up 400 yards. Deshotel also scored eight times.
Junior offensive linemen Darren Fontenot and junior quarterback Mark Ivory represent Basile on the second team offense. Ivory, in his first year as a full-time starter, threw for 856 yards and completed over 50 percent of his passes. He threw for 12 scores.
Chazz Swift blew up opposing defenses all season long. In fact, coaches from other teams even complimented Swift on a regular basis for his action on the field. It was a no-brainer when the senior defensive linemen was named the Defensive Most Valuable Player of the League. Swift racked up 66 tackles and led the team with five sacks.
Joining Swift were three other BHS defensive players on the first team. Senior linebacker Josh Bertrand was one of the top Beracats in tackles in 2013. He collected 78 overall and sacked the opposing quarterback four times. The versatile defensive captain also picked off a pair of passes. Deshotel, who was on first team offense, was selected as defensive back. The senior gobbled up 43 tackles on the season and popped off a pair of interceptions. Ceaser, also on first team offense, was named the kick returner on the defensive squad. The speedy junior returned three kickoffs for a touchdown in 2013.
Tyler Walker (DL, SOPH), Blaise Hebert (LB, SOPH) and Kyle Francois (DB, JR) each represented the Basile football team on the second defensive team.
Bertrand was named the Coach of the year for District 4-1A.
