NEW ROADS - The Basile Bearcats came into the game against Catholic of Pointe Coupee with a chance to remain tied atop the District 5-1A standings.
However, the Hornets had other plans, as they took a 21-13 win over the Bearcats. The loss not only drops Basile out of first place in the district, but may also move the Bearcats out of a chance for a home playoff game in the first round.
After a scoreless first quarter, Catholic got on the board first when running back Andrew Grezaffi hit pay dirt on a four-yard run. Nathan Carriere added the extra point and the Hornets held a 7-0 lead.
Basile did not let that lead last, as the Bearcats got on the scoreboard mid-way through the second quarter. Jarred Belle scored his only touchdown of the night on a six-yard run. Abdul Mlingo added the extra point and the game was tied 7-7 heading into the locker room for half-time.
The game continued to be a back and forth affair in the second half. Catholic added another score in the third quarter when Grezaffi punched the ball into the end zone from 10 yards out. Carriere added the point after and the Hornets now held a 14-7 lead.
Basile got back into the game shortly after the Hornet touchdown. This time quarterback Dawson Ashford found Rashawn Murphy on a 52-yard touchdown pass that brought Basile within one point. However, the extra point kick was no good leaving the Bearcats trailing the Hornets 14-13.
The final touchdown of the night was the proverbial nail in the coffin for Basile, as Catholic put the game away for good with a 10-yard scoring pass from Carriere to Fontenot. Carriere was true on the point after and the Hornets led 21-13.
With the loss the Bearcats fall to 3-6 on the year and 2-2 in district play. They now are tied for second place with False River who lost 20-8 to Westminster.
Basile will host long time rival St. Ed’s this coming Friday night.
