Basile fighting for chance at hosting a home playoff game

Like every other team across the state that entered the 2016 season, certain goals were set.
For the Basile Bearcats (3-6, 2-2), those goals were to win a district championship, make the playoffs and get as many home games in the post-season as possible.
With the loss to Catholic of Pointe Coupee this past Friday night, the chance of a district championship faded when the last seconds ticked off the clock. Despite that loss, Basile will make the playoffs.
But, whether or not they reach the Top 16 in the power rankings and host a home game in the first round of the post-season will hinge on the outcome of their final regular season contest tomorrow night against longtime rival St. Ed’s.
That home game, slated for a 7 p.m. start time, holds a huge meaning for the Bearcats.
Turnovers have been crucial for the Bearcats in their last two contests. Against False River two weeks ago, Basile turned the ball over five times. This past Friday, the Bearcats were guilty of a fumble and an interception. Those mistakes have led the Basile offense to sputter at times.
The Blue Jays come into the game with an identical record to the Bearcats. St. Ed’s averages a meager 11.6 points per game and have been held to a touchdown or less in six games this season. The Blue Jays surrender 19.1 points per game on defense. However, this is a huge rivalry game and Bertrand knows not to take this team lightly.
“They are huge up front,” said Bertrand. “Their running backs hit the hole hard and run hard. You know, St. Ed’s has probably played a tougher schedule than us in the non-district season. But, now that they are playing teams their own size, it is showing that they are better than most people thought.”
