Getting their second win of the season and their first district win was a huge momentum boost for Basile, as they easily handled the North Central Hurricanes this past Friday. In that win, the Bearcats were able to run the football more effectively than they had all year long, amassing 285 yards on 25 carries.
“No doubt that when we are able to run the ball, we are a better football team,” stated Basile head coach Kevin Bertrand. “Running the ball is our identity. If we can effectively move the ball on the ground, it opens up more possibilities for us and it keeps the ball out of our opponent’s hands.”
If the Bearcats hope to continue their winning ways, they first must face the next challenge head on. That challenge comes as Basile will travel to Opelousas tonight to take on the 4-2 Westminster Crusaders. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
Westminster is coming off of a big 34-6 win over fellow District 5-1A opponent Catholic of Pointe Coupee. The Crusaders average 24 points per game on offense and have scored 34 points or more in three of their games.
Defensively, Westminster does concede some points, giving up an average of 19 points per game.
“Westminster is a solid ball club,” said Bertrand. “They make no secret as to what they are going to do on offense. They run the ball very effectively. They are hard-nosed on defense and are very aggressive. We are going to have to be very physical against them if we want to have a chance of winning. This is the time of the year that your start looking at the power rankings. We are going to have to keep winning and not leave our playoff hopes up to other teams.”
