Basile hosts South Cameron in hopes of picking up initial win

There is an old saying that most people take to heart when everything seems to not be going right. That saying is “back to the old drawing board.”
However, even after an 0-2 start for the Basile Bearcats, head coach Kevin Bertrand is not ready to wipe the entire slate clean. Rather, he believes the drawing board just needs some minor touch ups.
“We are not ready to panic,” said Bertrand. “We are just going to have to clean up some things and go into this next game with the attitude of getting better every play. Right now, my main concern is our depth at offensive line. We had a starter get hurt this past Friday and that means some shuffling of the guys up front and playing some younger players. They will just have to step up and get the job done.”
Those touch ups not only come on the offensive side of the ball but on the defensive side also. The Bearcats gave up 258 yards of rushing to the Bulldogs this past week including four tochdowns.
That may be a lot easier this week for the Bearcats. After taking on two solid teams from Class 2A and Class 3A, Basile will host Class 1A South Cameron tomorrow night. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
The Tarpons are 1-1 on the year, after losing 55-0 this past week to DeQuincy. According to Bertrand, playing a Class 1A school may be just what the doctor ordered.
“When you play schools like Vinton and Ville Platte that have a lot more players than you do, it is nice to finally play a team that has the same number of players as you do,” said Bertrand. “South Cameron will be a tough opponent. They can run the ball with effectiveness. They play a lot of players both ways, but that makes them football savvy. We are going to have to be a lot more physical than we have been the last two weeks to have a chance.”
