In what could go a long way in determining the district 5-1A championship, the Basile Bearcats will host the Westminster Crusaders Thursday night in a key district game. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
Basile comes into the game with an overall record of 5-1 and are 1-0 in district play. Meanwhile, Westminster is currently 4-2 overall and 1-0 in district. The Bearcats took down North Central this past Friday 34-0. The Crusaders lost to Catholic of Pointe Coupee 28-23.
After a rough go of it trying to run the football two weeks ago against Port Barre, something Basile is known for, the Bearcats got the ground game back in form against North Central. Basile rushed for 369 yards on 29 attempts.
“I thought our offensive line did a tremendous job against North Central,” said Basile head coach Kevin Bertrand. “Our backs hit the holes hard. We even got to work on our passing game and gave some of our younger receivers some chances to catch some passes. We are going to need that going forward.”
Westminster comes into the contest averaging 23.7 points per game on offense. However, the Crusaders are giving up 20.8 points per game defensively.
“Westminster reminds me of our team,” stated Bertrand. “They run the ball out of multiple sets just like us. We are going to have to force them into uncomfortable situations. Offensively, we need to find ways to get teams from loading the box on us; whether it is throwing the ball or running outside.”
Bertrand knows the significance of this game and its impact on the district title.
“This is a very important game for us in terms of trying to win a district title. Hopefully we can take the momentum early and keep the pressure on them.”
