It has just been one of those seasons for Basile in 2016. The Bearcats are now 1-3 on the year after a big 40-6 loss to Logansport this past Friday. But, head coach Kevin Bertrand knew that a slow start could be expected for Basile, especially having lost a ton of talent to graduation.
“We knew coming into the season that having a group of younger players and not a ton of depth at different positions that we may struggle at times,” said Bertrand. “But, our players have really tried to step up and they have never quit at any time during the season. We just ran into a buzz saw against Logansport the other night.”
However, the Bearcats can right the ship before they begin district play if they can take care of Class 3A Port Barre this Friday night in Basile. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
“Being 2-3 going into district is definitely better than 1-4,” said Bertrand. “If we can get the win Friday night against Port Barre, it would go a long way in our players seeing that all of their hard work is paying off. Once we get to district, we will be facing teams that are our size in numbers, which is a huge plus.”
Port Barre has struggled mightily this season. The Red Devils are 1-3 so far and average only 4.3 points per game and have relied upon a freshman quarter back all season long. The Red Devils give up 21.8 points per game on the defensive end.
Port Barre’s only win came this past week when they beat a one-win St. Edmund Blue Jay team 6-0.
Still the fact that Port Barre has not fared well this season does not mean that Basile is taking the Red Devils lightly.
“They are still a Class 3A team with lots of talent,” stated Bertrand. “We know that they are capable of putting up numbers on the board if they can get their offense together. We are going to have to go into the game treating it like a playoff game. Every week we can get a win gives us more power points and helps our seeding once the post-season begins.”
