BASILE -- In the most thrilling game of the season for both teams, the St. Edmund Blue Jays scored a big double overtime 29-28 win over long time rival Basile.
The loss more than likely knocks Basile out of the top 16 in the power rankings and puts a huge damper on the Bearcats’ chances of hosting a first round playoff game this Friday night.
After the game, Basile head coach Kevin Bertrand was disappointed for his players, especially the seniors.
“I just hurt for the kids,” stated Bertrand. “They really played their hearts out and to lose a game like this is not how they wanted to end the regular season. Now we have to wait and see where we fall when the playoff brackets come out.”
The biggest disappointment for Basile comes from the fact that they had an eight-point lead with 1:45 left to go in the third quarter, after fighting back from six points down.
But the Blue Jays found a way to tie the game in the final quarter and managed to get the win in the second overtime.
St. Ed’s scored the first points of the game at the 11:21 mark of the second quarter when freshman fullback Luke Doucet barreled in from 13 yards out. The extra point was no good, but the Blue Jays had a 6-0 lead.
Basile answered in the final minutes of the quarter, as quarterback Dawson Ashford hit Rashawn Murphy on a nine-yard slant route. Jacob Guillory tacked on the extra point and the Bearcats took a 7-6 lead into the locker room.
Basile scored for the second time on a 23-yard pass from Ashford to Murphy. The PAT was good from Guillory and the Bearcats now lead 14-6.
St. Ed’s tied the game on a one-yard quarterback sneak by Peter Miller and a two-point run from Brad Miller with 6:00 left in the game.
From there the game went into overtime, where St. Ed’s got the ball first. The Blue Jays scored on a two-yard run from Doucet and Jack Brown added the extra point to make the score 21-14 in favor of St. Ed’s.
Basile responded with a five-yard pass from Ashford to Murphy. Guillory tied the game again as his PAT sailed through the uprights.
In the second overtime, Basile got the ball first and the connection between Ashford to Murphy was used for the fourth time in the game, this time from 10 yards out. Guillory added the point after and the Bearcats lead 28-21.
The Blue Jays were undaunted, as they scored on their third play of the second overtime when Jack Miller slipped in from three yards out. St. Ed’s went for the win and Doucet bounded over right tackle for the two-point run and the win.
