Bearcats end regular season with perfection
The word perfection is not one that many can use often. In fact, in football it’s very rare. At Basile High School, perfection hasn’t been said since 1995. Now, the 2013 Basile Bearcats can add their names to that illustrious list. Basile defeated Oberlin 22-12 to cap the perfect regular season and earn a bye in the first round of the Class 1A playoffs.
Oberlin struck first blood by going up 6-0 in the second quarter. It was an impressive drive that showed the Tigers were going to represent in front of their home crowd.
Basile answered back quickly. The best running back in the district, Kendrick Ceasar, broke a 47-yard run for six points. The mid-field run stood alone as the extra point kick was missed.
With the game tied, Basile kept the pressure on OHS. They recovered a fumble and turned that into points. Gabe Fontenot hauled in a pass from Mason Deshotel on a trick play. The play was good for 35 yards and the kick was good.
As the first half was coming to a close, the Tigers fired off a score. A deep pass play that netted 47 yards came up big. The OHS team went for the two-point conversion, but it was not successful.
Basile held a 13-12 lead as the second half commenced. The two platoons of warriors battled it out throughout the third period and for most of the fourth period.
With less than five minutes left to go in the game, Basile’s offensive line took over. The group began moving Oberlin’s defensive line backward with every snap. After several running plays, Mark Ivory dropped back and found Deshotel in the corner of the end zone for a seven-yard strike. The score made it a 20-12 game and the extra point pretty much iced the game because Oberlin would have to put up two scores.
Ceasar ended the night with 108 yards and Fontenot was good for 48 yards. Ivory had 52 yards in the air overall.
The win means Basile will get a bye and most likely will be the third season in the Class 1A bracket. A game in New Orleans on Saturday could still move BHS to the fourth seed.
Brackets will come out today and be available on the LHSAA website.
“We feel really good about the momentum we have going into the playoffs,” said Head Coach Tony Bertrand. “The extra week will give up time to prep and heal up some of our minor injuries and bumps and bruises.”
