Bearcats pound Tarpons to go 2-1 in district play
The Basile Bearcats were not in a good mood after last week’s loss to Hamilton Christian and they were looking to take out their frustrations on someone. Enter the South Cameron Tarpons. The Bearcats scored early and often and did not let off of the gas until the fourth quarter as they pummeled the Tarpons 33-0. Basile now raises its record to 5-1 on the year and 2-1 in district. This was also a homecoming victory for the Bearcats.
Basile scored their first points in the first quarter of the game. Gabe Fontenot punched the ball in from three yards out and put the Bearcats up 6-0. Mark Ledoux tacked on the extra point and Basile led 7-0 with 6:45 left to go in the opening stanza.
The Bearcats would tack on two more touchdowns in the second quarter. Fontenot would rumble 90 yards for Basile’s second score of the night. Ledoux was dead center on the extra point and the Bearcats would extend their lead to 14-0 with 4:40 left to go in the second quarter. Kendrick Ceasar would then get into the scoring act, but not on the offensive side of the ball. Instead, with South Cameron backed up deep in their territory, Ceasar would scoop up a fumble and take it into the end zone from three yards out. The extra point would fail. However, with 1:03 seconds left in the half, Basile would extend its lead to 20-0.
The third quarter would basically be a repeat of the first half. The Bearcat offense would tack on more points and Basile’s defense would continue to stymie the Tarpon offense. With 9:32 left in the third quarter, Ceasar was able to put up a score on the offensive side of the ball. A 30 yard touchdown run by Ceasar extended the Bearcat lead to 26-0.
The try for the extra point would be no good and the score remained Basile 26, South Cameron 0. Gabe Fontenot would finish the Bearcat scoring in the game. Fontenot was able to plunge over the goal line from two yards out. This time, Ledoux was true for the extra point, and with 2:03 left to go in the third quarter, the score was 33-0 in favor of Basile. With the game in hand, The Bearcats would use the fourth quarter to get back up players some much-needed game experience. The Basile defense would continue to dominate the rest of the game and the Bearcats would finish with a 33-0 victory over the Tarpons.
On offense for Basile, Gabe Fontenot would lead all rushers with 122 yards on seven carries and two touchdowns. Ceasar would add another 100 yards on 10 carries and one touchdown. Bearcat quarterback Mark Ivory completed four passes on seven attempts for 42 yards. Fontenot led all receivers with one catch for 17 yards. All together, the Bearcats amassed 294 total yards of offense. The Basile defense was very stingy, only allowing the Tarpons 98 yards rushing and a total of 109 yards of offense.
Basile will travel to Grand Lake on Thursday to take on the Hornets. Grand Lake lost to Oberlin on Friday by a score of 46-14 and now are 2-4 on the year and 1-2 in district 4-1A. The Bearcats have shown that the loss to Hamilton Christian is out of their system. It looks like Basile is now ready to take on the rest of the district opponents. A Bearcat team that is hungry to restore its district domination is a team to be reckoned with. Look out district 4-1A.
