Bearcats, Tigers tangle in regular season finale
The Basile Bearcats have shown that they can win in the biggest of games. The Bearcats proved once again thatthey are a team to be reckoned with as they disposed of another ranked team this past Friday. A 48-20 victory over the Elton Indians most definitely kept Basile in the top six of the power rankings.
A victory over the Oberlin Tigers this coming Friday could inch the Bearcats up even farther in the rankings, as Basile moves to 8-1 on the year and 5-1 in district. Game time is set for 7 p.m. in Basile.
Against the Indians, the Bearcats welcomed the return of Kendrick Ceasar. Ceasar had been hampered with a toe injury the last few weeks and was not able to perform at 100 percent. The returning all-state player looked like the Ceasar of old, as he scored five touchdowns in all offensive phases of the game. The 30 point performance came on two rushing scores, two pass receptions and a kickoff return.
Ceasar accounted for 267 yards of the total 435 yards of offensive earned by the Bearcats. He rushed for 202 yards and hauled in 65 receiving yards. Gabe Fontenot gave his typical performance as he rushed for 126 yards on 12 carries.
The Bearcat defense was outstanding against Elton, as they held the state’s leading rusher, Marcus Lemoine, to a meager 140 yards on the ground. Basile allowed 333 yards of total offense to the Indians, most of that came late in the game with the score basically out of reach. Basile also intercepted two passes.
The Oberlin Tigers come to Basile with an overall record of 5-4 and a district record of 3-3. Oberlin can score points, as the Tigers average 33 points per game and have scored 40 or more points on four separate occasions. However, Oberlin also gives up a lot of points. The Tigers allow 25 points per game on defense.
With a victory over the Tigers, the Bearcats hope to inch closer to that top four spot in the power rankings. Not only will that give Basile a first round bye, but would guarantee at least two home games in the next three rounds of the playoffs. With the return of Ceasar and the defense playing as well as they have all season long, it will be hard for any Basile opponent to upend the highly ranked Bearcats.
