The success of the Basile Bearcats this past football season continues to pay dividends. Two outstanding senior players have been named to the 2015 Class 1A all-state football team.
Offensively, running back Gabe Fontenot was tabbed as a first team selection. Fontenot earned that spot after rushing for 1,951 yards on 239 carries and 25 touchdowns. The senior blasted opposing defenses for an average of 8.2 yards per carry.
According to Basile head coach Tony Bertrand, Fontenot was the one person that could be counted on when things got tough on offense.
“It was a blessing to have Gabe on our team,” said Bertrand. “When it seemed like we could not get things going on offense, we leaned on him to get us going. We knew we could count on him to carry the ball 25 to 30 times a game and not get tired. In fact, when the later in the game, the better he got. Gabe is a one of a kind running back. He had the power and the speed to make things happen.”
Fontenot’s reaction was one of surprise at the selection.
“I did not find out until the day after the team was named,” stated Fontenot. “It was exciting for me to be named. I want to thank my coaches and teammates for helping me to be the best running back I could be.”
On the defensive side, senior linebacker Blaise Hebert was given the honor of being named to the first team. Hebert finished the year with 152 tackles, three sacks, five forced fumbles and two interceptions. Hebert was also the most valuable player for District 5-1A.
“Blaise was another coach on the field for us this year,” said Bertrand. “His leadership was the main reason why our defense played the way they did this season. I don’t know if we will ever be able to replace a great player and a great person like Blaise. He will be recognized as one of the best that ever played here.”
Hebert was also humbled in his selection.
“I was proud to be selected to represent Basile on the all-state team,” commented Hebert. “I would not have been selected if it were not for the coaches and my fellow teammates. This award belongs to them as much as it does to me.”
