PINE PRAIRIE – It was an night of big plays and big performances for the Pine Prairie Panthers as they cruised to a 47-6 win over inter-parish rival Mamou here Friday night.
A pair of senior players, quarterback Dylan Doucet and running back Douglas Fontenot ran wild for the Panthers, combining for 366 yards and six touchdowns in just 23 carries.
“What a performance from Dylan and Douglas,” said Panther head coach Yves Prince. “They definitely dominated the game tonight. But you have to give credit to the offensive line and to our fullback Joshua Fontenot. We are starting to play as a team and it feels good.”
It did not take long for the Panthers to showcase their talented backfield.
Mamou got the ball to start the game and fumbled it away to the Panthers at the Demon 48-yard line.
The very first play from scrimmage for Pine Prairie, Fontenot took the ball over the left side and scampered 48 yards to pay dirt.
Joshua Fontenot added the extra point and with only 24 seconds gone from the clock, Pine Prairie led 7-0.
Mamou did not fold the tents right away. The Demons took the ball on their next possession and drove the ball down to the Panther nine-yard line in 12 plays.
Junior running back Joab Perron did most of the heavy lifting for Mamou on the drive, carrying the ball 10 ten of the first twelve plays.
However, a loss of six on third and goal put the Demons in a fourth down situation; one that Mamou could not capitalize on, forcing a turnover on downs.
Pine Prairie did not hesitate to take advantage of the missed opportunity from the Demons.
On the ensuing play, Douglas Fontenot jetted 55 yards to the Mamou 30-yard line. A face mask penalty on the Demons put the ball at the Mamou 15-yard line.
Three plays later, Doucet called his own number on the veer option and plunged in from five yards out to extend the Panther lead.
The extra point was wide right, but Pine Prairie now led 13-0 with 2:27 left in the first quarter.
Mamou was forced to punt on their next possession, giving the Panthers the ball at their 34-yard line.
After a three yard pick up by Douglas Fontenot, Doucet once again kept the ball on the option and scurried 63-yards over the right side for the Panther touchdown as the first quarter expired.
Joshua Fontenot tacked on the extra point and the Panthers were in control of the game 20-0.
The second quarter was much of the same. Mamou could not get much going offensively and the Panthers continued to add points to the scoreboard.
Pine Prairie struck again midway through the second quarter. Taking over on thier 13-yard line, the Panthers reached the Demon 46-yard line in six plays.
On second and six, Doucet was off to the races again, this time from 46 yards out, as he raced past the Mamou defense.
Joshua Fontenot was true on the extra point and with 6:42 left in the half, the Panthers now had a commanding 27-0 lead.
However, Pine Praire was not done scoring before halftime.
The Panthers put together another drive right before the first half came to a close.
Pine Prairie drove 63 yards in 10 plays, capping off the drive with a 10 yard touchdown run by Doucet.
Fontenot added the extra point and Pine Prairie took a 34-0 lead in to the locker room.
Mamou kicked off to start the second half and did not do themselves any favors, as the ball traveled only four yards on the kick.
The Panthers wasted no time as Douglas Fontenot took the handoff on the first play of the second half and rumble 39 yards for the touchdown.
A high snap on the extra point resulted in a missed two-point conversion. However, the Panthers now led 40-0.
Mamou gave the ball right back to the Panthers on their next possession. A Demon fumble was recovered by Joshua Fontenot at the Mamou 34-yard line.
Four plays later, Gaten Chaddrick galloped 22 yards for the Panther’s last score of the night. Fontenot nailed the extra point and Pine Prairie now owned a 47-0 lead.
Mamou managed to get on the board late in the fourth quarter. The Demons started their last drive of the night at their 24-yard line.
Twelve plays later, Levi Fontenot hit Perron in the end zone on a 20 yard pass with no time left in the game. The two-point conversion was no good, making the final score 47-6.
“I thought we ran the ball well, especially in the first quarter,” stated Demon head coach Brian Brumfield. “We just have to regroup and get ready for Oakdale next week. We have a few key players hurt right now. Hopefully they will be ready to play next week.”
On the night, Doucet carried the ball 11 times for 166 yards and four touchdown.
Douglas Fontenot had 200 yards rushing on 12 carries and two touchdowns.
Perron was the leading rusher for Mamou. The junior had 24 carries for 113 yards and one receiving touchdown.
The Panthers are now 2-2 on the season and will travel to Baton Rouge next Friday to take on Tara High School.
