Demons to clash with Red Devils in Friday contest
The Mamou Green Demons will look to continue to improve as they host the Pickering Red Devils at home on Friday night. Mamou is coming off of a 13-6 loss to Ville Platte High in the Evangeline Parish Jamboree. Pickering beat Rosepine in their jamboree last week.
Offensively, the Demons managed only 20 yards of total offense against Ville Platte. Part of the reason for the subpar performance of the offense, according to Head Coach Brian Brumfield, was the lack of execution. “We have to do a better job of catching the football,” said Brumfield. “If we want to be effective on the offensive side of the ball, we have to be more consistent in the passing game. If we don’t, then other teams will just key on our run game.” Coach Brumfield added, “Our offensive line needs to focus on the fundamentals a little more. When we are sound up front, it allows us to be more multiple.”
Coach Brumfield also expounded on some of the work still needed on the defensive side of the ball. “Looking at the jamboree tape, I could see our tackling techniques were not up to par. It is something that needs to be corrected and we will look to work on that aspect at practice. The jamboree is good for spotting the things that need to be corrected before the regular season starts.”
Overall, Coach Brumfield was pleased with the effort of his team against Ville Platte. “I thought we played well for the most part,” stated Brumfield. “I was especially pleased with the fact that we came out and gave a great effort. We need to continue competing and having fun.”
The Pickering Red Devils will bring an important test to Mamou on Friday. The Red Devil run game is especially concerning for Coach Brumfield.
“They have some really good running backs,” Brumfield declared. “Their backs remind me a little of Basile’s backs. They are a multiple formation team and execute well on offense. Defensively, they have some real nice sized kids up front. We are going to have to capitalize on any opportunity given to us to be successful against them.”
A win for Mamou to start the season would be a big boost in confidence. Coach Brumfield and his staff plan to be diligent this week in working on the techniques needed to advance in the win column.
Game time Friday night is set for 7 p.m.
