Demons complete regular season with win
To get into the post-season, the Mamou Demons needed to finish the regular season with a win over the Kinder Yellow Jackets on Saturday night. The Demons found themselves at number 35 in the power ratings, having to be in the top 32 in order to continue their season. Mamou did what was necessary, defeating the Yellow Jackets 60-52. Now they must wait until Monday to find out if they have done enough to earn that playoff berth.
The Demons opened the game looking to gain an advantage over Kinder early in the contest. Mamou came out shooting lights out as they were able to pop the nets for 19 points in the first quarter. The Demons got three-pointers from Trey Wilson, Mack Thomas and Toby Ortego to help pace the offense. Defensively, Mamou applied early pressure and held the Yellow Jackets to nine points in the period.
Another big offensive output by the Demons helped to maintain an advantage in the second quarter. Two more baskets from beyond the arc by Wilson aided in Mamou’s 15 point period. Kinder was able to pick up the pace on the offensive side of the court. The Yellow Jackets added 16 points in the stanza. When the horn sounded to end the first half, the Demons held a 34-23 lead.
Both squads came out of the locker room pushing the pace on offense. Mamou scored 14 points in the third period, only to be outdone by one point. Kinder netted 15 points in the quarter to bring the Demon advantage down to 10 points, 48-38, as the period came to a close.
It seemed as if neither team’s defense could hold back the offensive power of the other team. For the third quarter in a row, both Mamou and Kinder were able to score in double digits. The Demons were paced by Ortego, who scored seven points, in slicing the nets for 12 points. The Yellow Jackets produced 14 offensive points in the stanza, outscoring Mamou for the second quarter in a row. However, the Demons held off Kinder for the win.
Mamou had four players score in double figures in the game. Wilson and Thomas each scored 15 points, while Edwards added 14 points. Ortego chipped in 11 points.
The Demons finish the year with an 11-17 record and a 6-4 district record. The LHSAA playoff brackets will be released on Monday. Until then, Mamou sits back and hopes for a spot in the post-season tournament.
