Demons, Lady Demons split with Vinton
The Mamou High Demons and Lady Demons played host to Vinton High School on Tuesday night in district play. The Lady Demons were able to keep pace with league leading Lake Arthur as they destroyed the Lady Lions 58-9. The Demons were outmatched from the start and took the 77-43 loss.
In the girl’s game, the Lady Demons gave Vinton no chance from the opening tip. Mamou jumped out to a 16-2 lead in the first quarter and never felt any pressure from the Lady Lions. With one of the most impressive defensive efforts of any team on the year, the Lady Demons held Vinton to only two more points in the second period. Mamou held a commanding 26-4 lead as the first half came to a close.
The second half was a mirror image of the first. The third quarter saw the Lady Demons outscore Vinton 13-4 to extend their lead to 39-8. Amazingly, Mamou was able to put even more of a defensive stranglehold on the Lady Lions, holding them to a meager one point in the final stanza. The Lady Demons finished the game with 19 points to secure the win.
Mamou was led by Darelzeray Bellard, who netted 18 points. Arkieyanah Thomas added 13 points and Kiajah Wilson chipped in 10 points. The Lady Demons are 22-7 on the year and 8-1 in district play. Mamou will travel to Lake Arthur on Thursday with a shot at district co-championship if they can pull off the win.
The boy’s game was not what the Mamou Demons were hoping for. The Demons got down early in the game as the Lions jumped out to a 24-4 first quarter lead. Mamou outscored Vinton in the second period 11-9, but still trailed by 18 as the first half ended.
The third quarter looked like a repeat of the opening stanza. The Lions extended their lead to 53-21 by outpacing the Demons 23-6 in the quarter. The final period was evenly matched as each team scored over 20 points. However, Vinton had too much of an advantage and closed out the game with the 34 point win.
Trey Wilson scored 18 points to lead all Demon players. Toby Ortego chipped in 12 points in the loss. Mamou drops to 9-17 on the year and 4-4 in district. The Demons will travel to Lake Arthur on Thursday looking to keep their playoff hopes alive.
