Demons let much needed district win slip by
Coming into the game Friday night, the Mamou Green Demons were two games out of first place in district 4-2A. Holding the lead position were the Welsh Greyhounds, which just so happened to be the Demon’s Friday night opponent. A win by the Green Demons would close the gap and give Mamou a shot at the district title with only a handful of games left in league play. Mamou could not capitalize on the situation as they fell to Welsh by the score of 70-47.
To open the first period, Welsh score right off of the tip. The Demon’s Toby Ortego answered with a three-point basket. The Greyhounds came right back, going on a 10-0 run with several steals leading to easy lay-ups. With 2:31 left in the first, Mamou was down 14-3. The Demons would then capitalize on a Cameron Tinley short jumper. Welsh came right back with six points off of two turnovers bringing the first period to an end. Mamou would be down 19-5.
The second period would be a see-saw battle as both teams traded points all the way until halftime. Mamou’s Trey Wilson and Luke Thomas would bury three-pointers closing the gap on the Greyhounds. Welsh’s Keshon Bell brought the lead back with two three-pointers of his own, giving the Greyhounds a 33-15 lead at halftime.
The Demons came out from the locker room after halftime fired up. Mamou’s Trey Wilson and Russell Edwards looked for the Green Demon fans to make some noise. Wilson nailed two three-pointers from long range and Edwards man-handled the Greyhounds defense down low. Mamou and Welsh would once again trade points from the four-minute mark until the buzzer went off, signaling the end of the third period. The Demons still trailed 27-49.
The fourth and final period would be an offensive fireworks performance by both teams, as the two squads combined to score a total of 41 points. With Mamou down big, the Demons needed points fast if they hoped for any type of comeback against the Greyhounds. Wilson, Thomas, and Hunter Marcantel would all nail NBA range three point baskets. When the smoke settled and the buzzer sounded the Green Demons fell short to the Greyhounds by a final score 70-47.
On the night Mamou was lead on offense by Trey Wilson scoring 21 points and Russell Edwards scored eight points. The Green Demons will host Vinton on Tuesday night. They will be looking for another win to keep their dreams of making the playoffs alive.
