Demons seek win in Vinton

The Mamou High Demons are in need of a victory after losing their last five games. The Demons travel to Vinton to take on the Lions Friday night hoping to get that victory. Mamou is now 1-6 on the season and 0-2 in district after suffering a loss this past Friday to the Welsh Greyhounds by the score of 55-0. The Demons are continuing to play hard even though they have not been able to add on to the win column. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
Last Friday the Demons had a hard time moving the football against a very good Welsh team. Mamou did get inside the Greyhound five yard line on its second possession, but an interception killed the drive. After that, the Demons did not mount much of an offense against the Welsh defense. The Demons managed only 166 yards of total offense. Of that total, 119 yards came through the air. Leading rusher for Mamou was Nathaniel Holland, who rushed for 18 yards on six attempts. Robbie Deshotel completed five out of 23 passes for 119 yards and three interceptions.
Defensively, the Demons were outmatched from the start. Welsh scored early and often against Mamou. The size of the Welsh offense was a little more than Mamou could handle. The Demons allowed seven touchdowns in the first half. Mamou gave up 338 yards of total offense, 248 of that came on the ground.
“Welsh was not very big, but they were quick and explosive,” exclaimed Mamou Head Coach Brian Brumfield. “At times we moved the ball but they did a good job on defense keeping us out of the end zone. They were really sharp on offense. I will say this, I would like to see them play Kinder. That will be a great game to watch.”
The Demons now face the Vinton Lions. Vinton is 4-3 on the season and 0-2 in district. The Demons and Lions have two common opponents. Both squads have faced Pine Prairie and Welsh. Vinton lost to Welsh 30-12 and defeated Pine Prairie 39-13. A win by Mamou would be a moral victory for the boys in Green. There is no doubt that all of the players on the squad are not ready to pack it in, especially the seniors. Mamou has given everything it has this season and will continue to do so.
“Vinton has some big kids up front,” said Brumfield. “I would compare them to DeQuincy in size. They do not have a lot of players, but they come right at you on offense. They have a big running back that they want to get the ball to. Defensively, they don’t do a whole lot. They run a base 4-2-5 and basically just line up and play football. We are going to go out and give everything we have and see what happens.”
