Evangeline Parish basketball weekly roundup

The Evangeline Parish basketball teams got the season underway this week. Here is a roundup of this past week’s action on the hardwood.

Girls Basketball

Ville Platte
vs. New Iberia
The Lady Bulldogs opened up season play Monday at New Iberia Senior High School. Ville Platte went into the class 5A Yellow Jackets’ gym and came away with the 65-50 victory. The Lady Bulldogs led 34-25 at the half.
Ville Platte outscored New Iberia 31-25 in the second half. Leading the way for Ville Platte was Tyreonna Doucet, who scored 18 points. Deja Mckinney added 17 points and Brianna Pete chipped in 16 points. The Lady Bulldogs are 1-0 on the season after the win.

Sacred Heart vs. Opelousas Catholic
The Sacred Heart Lady Trojans travelled to Opelousas Tuesday and secured a 56-53 victory over the Lady Vikings. Sacred Heart was led by Catherine Poche, who tossed in 13 points. Natalie Earles added 11 points and Hannah Lemoine chipped in 10 points in the win.
The Lady Trojans held a 28-21 halftime lead. The game was tied 33 all in at the end of the third quarter with Sacred Heart outscoring Opelousas Catholic 23-20 in the last stanza. The Lady Trojans are now 1-0 on the season.

Ville Platte
vs. Northside
The Lady Bulldogs took on class 4A Northside Tuesday in the Rapides Tournament. The Lady Bulldogs trailed 10-9 to the Lady Vikings at the end of the first quarter. A 17 point second quarter gave Ville Platte the 26-22 halftime lead.
The Lady Bulldogs went on to outscore Northside 28-24 in the second half for the victory. Leading the way for Ville Platte was Deja McKinney, who poured in 27 points. Tyreonna Doucet added 12 points. The Lady Bulldogs are now 2-0 on the season.

Ville Platte
vs. Buckeye
Ville Platte continued its play in the Rapides Tournament Friday night, taking on the Lady Panthers of Buckeye High School. The Lady Bulldogs dominated the entire game in a 63-33 route of Buckeye.
Ville Platte led 16-5 at the end of the first quarter and took a 31-9 lead into halftime. The Lady Bulldogs outscored Buckeye 32-24 the rest of the way for the victory. Ville Platte is now 3-0 on the young season.
Brianna Pete led all Lady Bulldogs scorers with 23 points. Miya Mckinney added nine points. Deja McKinney and Tyreonna Doucet did not play in the contest.

Boys Basketball

Ville Platte
vs. Alexandria
The Ville Platte Bulldogs travelled to Lecompte Tuesday to take on the Alexandria Senior High Trojans in the Rapides Tournament. The Bulldogs could not hold on to a 39-36 half time lead and lost 88-81 to the class 5A Trojans.
Ville Platte trailed 58-55 at the end of the third quarter and was outscored 30-26 in the final stanza. Leading scorers for the Bulldogs were Ernest Ardoin and Alex Gooden, each chipping in 18 points. Keilan Semien and JaQualen Doucet each added 11 points in the loss. Ville Platte is now 0-1 on the season.
