LAKE CHARLES – For his outstanding efforts on the mound over the weekend, senior right-hander Kaleb Fontenot has been chosen as the Southland Conference Pitcher of the Week as presented by UniversalCoin.com, the league office announced on Monday.
The weekly award is the first of Fontenot’s career and the first this season for the Cowboy baseball squad.
Fontenot put forth his most impressive outing of the season as he tossed a complete game shutout to help lead McNeese State to a 4-0 win over UIW Friday night. Fontenot went all nine, striking out seven and walking three batters. He allowed five of 18 runners on base to advance to second while the McNeese defense induced three double plays to limit UIW in the contest.
The complete game shutout was the second of Fontenot’s career and was the first of back-to-back shutouts against UIW on the weekend, a feat that had not been accomplished by a McNeese team since 1994.
Fontenot is 2-2 on the season in five appearances with a shut out. He has 33 strikeouts and only given up nine walks.
The Cowboys return home for an Easter weekend series with Abilene Christian. The three-game set will begin Thursday at 6 p.m. followed by a Friday night contest at 6 o’clock. The series will conclude Saturday at 3 p.m.
