Lady Bulldogs make short work of Lady Jags
Ville Platte High, the top-rated team in Class 3A, destroyed Thomas Jefferson 70-31 in Thursday night’s opening round game of the playoffs. The win moves VPHS to the next round, where they will host the Brusly Lady Panthers Monday night at 6 p.m. Brusly defeated Baker 49-34 in their opening round match-up.
The match-up between VPHS and Brusly is expected to be a good one.
“They (Brusly) shoot really good,” said VPHS Head Coach Dot Doulet. “They can hit the three from all over and play good defense. They are also a well-disciplined team.”
The Lady Bulldogs’ offense caught fire early. They put up 24 points on the wings of Deja McKinney’s amazing shooting. She hit a pair of three-point shots and sank 11 points in the frame. The little warrior had a record-setting night with 30 points in the game. She led VPHS in scoring. Tyreonna Doucet was big with six points in the frame and 14 points in the game.
Ville Platte took their 24-7 lead into the second period and then cranked up the defense. They held Thomas Jefferson to just two points in the period. The defense forced turnover after turnover and transformed most of the turnovers into points. They were also big on the boards, taking down rebound after rebound. McKinney went off for the second straight period. She hit 10 points, including another pair of three-point bombs. Doucet chipped in with a pair of shots as well.
With a 43-9 lead, the Lady Bulldogs were in clear control and there was no stopping them. In the third period, VPHS put up another 14 points. McKinney sank another seven points, including a three-point shot. VPHS went up 57-19.
In the final frame, there would be no stopping VPHS. They held TJHS to 12 points and scored another 13 points. Breanna Pete drained a three-point bomb sending the Lady Jags down for the count.
