Lady Bulldogs remain undefeated in district
The Ville Platte Lady Bulldogs hosted the Port Barre Lady Red Devils on Friday in an important district game. Port Barre came into the game 1-1 in district play and 12-6 on the season. On top of that, Ville Platte was without Head Coach Dot Doulet, as she has not been able to be on the bench due to a bout of pneumonia. So the pressure was on the Lady Bulldogs to continue their district domination. Ville Platte responded with authority as they took down Port Barre 74-45.
Coming off of the opening tip, the Lady Bulldogs took an early 5-0 lead. The Lady Devils responded, tying the game at five apiece at the 6:05 mark. Again, Ville Platte stretched the lead back to five on buckets by Deja McKinney and Kabreonna Stevens. However, Port Barre showed they were not going away easily as they cut the lead to one with 1:45 left in the period. A two-point basket by Brianna Pete gave Ville Platte the three-point lead as the quarter ended.
Both squads continued to trade buckets in the first part of the second period. The game was a one-point affair, 18-17, when the Lady Devils scored with 5:28 left in the stanza. The Lady Bulldogs then proved why they are the team to beat in the district, as they reeled off 17 of the next 19 points in the period. Four three-pointers, two by Stevens and two by McKinney, aided in the Lady Bulldog run. Ville Platte had now extended the lead to 35-19 as the first half buzzer sounded.
The Lady Bulldogs came out of the locker room looking to cement the win. A combination of tremendous defensive pressure and an offensive explosion propelled Ville Platte in the third quarter. The Lady Bulldogs rattled the iron for 23 points led by Pete, who netted eight points of her own. Port Barre managed 17 points in the stanza, but now found themselves down by 22 points as the period ended.
Ville Platte was not done imposing their will as the fourth quarter opened. Each team traded baskets until the 3:54 mark of the fourth period. From that point on, the Lady Bulldogs went on an 8-2 run to finish off the Lady Devils and garner the victory. Ville Platte was led by McKinney, who stripped the nets for 30 points, including five three-point baskets. Stevens added 15 points, while Miya McKinney chipped in 12 points. Pete was good for 11 points in the win.
With the win, the Lady Bulldogs are now 19-4 on the season and most importantly stay undefeated in district with a 3-0 record. Ville Platte will travel to Pine Prairie on Tuesday to take on the Lady Panthers in a district contest.
