Lady Bulldogs start district off right
The Ville Platte High Lady Bulldogs took a 2-0 lead in the District 5-3A standings.
The local girls crushed the Church Point Lady Bears 73-37 in a game that started out really close, but saw the VPHS group keep firing.
In the opening frame, VPHS and Northwest showed the fans a see-saw battle. The teams traded buckets before Ville Platte could take a commanding lead. Deja McKinney buried nine points, including a three-point shot. Breanna Pete added a three-point shot as well and completed the period with five points. She had a total of 14 points overall.
Going into the second period, Ville Platte was up 20-12. The close battle continued, but VPHS slowly pulled ahead. Breanna Pete was big on defense for the Lady Bulldogs. The Lady Bulldogs added 15 more points in the frame. Pete hit five points at the end of the period to give VPHS the momentum going into the half.
Ville Platte was up 35-26 at the mid-way point. Both teams slowed down the game considerably. Ville Platte managed to out-score Church Point 13-1 in the third period. McKinney and Kabreonna Steven each hit a pair of buckets to help the local girls.
In the final period, VPHS kept the pressure up. They held NHS to just 10 points, while they put up 25 points. McKinney went off the chart with another 12 points. She hit a pair of three-point shots and finished the night with 32 points overall. Doucet ended her night with 12 points.
Ville Platte slid by Northwest 56-34. The Lady Bulldogs faced off with the Lady Raiders in front of their home crowd. They took a 13-8 lead to get things started. McKinney sank a pair of triple-point baskets and Tyreonna Doucet added a pair of lay-ups as well.
The local girls stayed in charge by out-scoring Northwest 18-1 in the second period. Ja’Kyra Thomas hit a pair of buckets and Pete added six points. One of her shots was a long-distance, three-point bomb. McKinney also added a three of her own. She would lead the team with 15 points overall.
With a halftime deficit of 31-9, Northwest answered back with 19 points. The Lady Raiders gained some of the momentum back, but it was not enough to take the lead. Ville Platte was clinging to a 37-28 lead as the game entered the final period.
Ville Platte answered with 19 points in the final frame. Shalinda Thomas put up six points, which included a three-point bomb. McKinney added a pair of buckets and Miya McKinney chipped in with six points as well.
Ville Platte improved to 19-2 on the season and 2-0 overall in league play. They will host Pine Prairie Tuesday night in Ville Platte.
