Lady Panther softball heating up
It is another season on the diamond for the Pine Prairie Lady Panthers and legendary Head Coach Carolyn Deville. After making it to the quarter-finals last year and falling to a tough North Webster team, the Lady Panthers are back on a mission. This year, they will be competing in Class 3A and that means the run to Sulphur will be tougher. They will have to compete against teams like John Curtis, Parkview Baptist and Evangel, just to name a few. The Lady Panthers are currently 6-5 on the season.
They started off the year with a pair of wins. They beat Bunkie 9-1 and then Oakdale 10-0.
Against Bunkie, the Lady Panthers scattered their runs across the board. They got one run in the first inning and then three in the third frame. Sara Tate scored twice in the game. Alyssa Jackson, and Sabrina Fontenot were each 2-4 at the plate. Macy Harvey was also 2-4 with a double and an RBI. Reagan Reed put up a pair of doubles at the plate and drove in a pair of runs. Julia Chaddrick and Alexis Hammond each went 3-4 with the stick. Chaddrick scrapped a triple and scored once.
Hammond earned the win in the circle. She fanned three batters and allowed just one earned run.
PPHS pounded out 10 runs and a barrage of hits against Oakdale. Sabrina Fontenot led the charge on offense, going perfect with a 3-3 performance. She scored twice and ripped three doubles. She pushed four runs home. Chaddrick was also 2-3 and scored twice in the game. Harvey ripped a double in the fourth inning and scored as well. Rani Ardoin, a junior, punched a pair of doubles and scored once. Reed also doubled in the fourth frame and brought in a run.
In the circle, Hammond took the win. She struck out seven lady Warriors in her tenure and scattered three hits.
The Lady Panthers suffered their first loss of the season in the Menard Tournament. They lost in extra innings to Many by a score of 4-3.
The Lady Tigers went up 1-0 in the first inning, but PPHS was able to tie the game at 1-1 in the second frame. Harvey walked and scored on a single from Reed.
Many took the lead back in the top of the fourth inning and PPHS knotted it back up at 2-2 in the sixth inning. Shaina Boutte singled and scored on a double from Harvey.
In the top of the eighth frame, Many plated two runs to go up 4-2. PPHS responded with a run in their half of the inning when Tate scored on a double from Chaddrick,
PPHS rebounded with a 13-1 over Tioga. They banged out 19 hits in the game, including a 3-4 performance from Alexis Hammond. One of the hits was a double that pushed home a pair of runs. Jackson, Boutte, Ardoin, Fontenot, Reed and Tori Bordelon each collected a pair of hits in the game.
Pine Prairie held a 6-0 lead going into the top of the sixth inning and then exploded with offense. Hammond got the win in the circle.
The Lady Panthers blasted Neville 13-3 in the Alexandria Tournament. The Lady Tigers went up early on Pine Prairie, but it did not last very long.
In the second inning, PPHS popped off six runs to take the lead. The surge included a grand slam home run for Maci Harvey (2-3 4RBIs). In the third frame, PPHS ripped off five more runs. Fontenot went hard for a solo home run and Sara Tate added a double.
Hammond earned the win in the circle for the local girls.
PPHS fell to Evangel 8-3 at the ASH Tournament. The Lady Eagles went up 5-0 in their first two trips to the plate and PPHS was not able to catch up.
PPHS scored a run in the fourth inning when Jackson doubled and scored. She scored again in the sixth inning after she reached base with a triple. Tate doubled and scored in the seventh inning. A double from Hammond brought Tate home to score.
PPHS belted Oberlin 10-0 in six innings. Jackson earned the win in the circle. She struck 11 Lady Tigers and allowed just one hit.
At the plate, Harvey led the charge. She went 2-4 with a home run and a triple. Bordelon also ripped a home run and was 2-3 at the plate. Reed hit a double in the sixth inning.
The Lady Panthers took the first District 5-3A win over Port Barre Thursday. They defeated the Lady Red Devils 4-0.
Jackson took the win in the circle. She struck out nine batters and scattered three hits.
Pine Prairie took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Jackson singled and Fontenot reached on a fielder’s choice. Both runners would later score on an error forced by Harvey.
Harvey singled in the bottom of the sixth inning and Chaddrick reached on a bunt single. The two later scored on a series of walks.
Pine Prairie will host the Church Point Lady Bears Tuesday in their second district contest.
