Lady Trojans earn 1A fifth seed

His final words last season were, “Next year, its Sulphur or bust.” That was Sacred Heart Head Coach Doug Guillory’s final words after a 6-3 loss to St. John in the second round of the Class 1A playoffs. The Lady Eagles went on to lose to Westminster Christian Academy at Sulphur in the Fastpitch 56 High School State Tournament. WCA, a school that SHHS had defeated in league play, went on to lose to Archbishop Hannan.
What that all boils down to is the fact that any team can beat any team on a given day. That means the fifth seeded Lady Trojans will not take the Lady Gators of Northwood Lena lightly today, despite the 28th seed they hold.
Sacred Heart is the co-champ of District 5-1A. They finished the season with an overall record of 16-7 and they were 5-1 in league play. Their lone league loss came to the top-seeded Catholic of Pointe Coupee Lady Hornets. SHHS and PCC split in their two league meetings.
Sacred Heart has had its ups and downs this season. At one time, they were riding a five game win streak. They are coming off of a 3-2 win over Glenmora as they march into the post-season.
The Lady Gators finished the year 12-13 and 2-7 in league play. They are currently on a five game skid. On paper, they should not pose much of a threat to the Lady Trojans.
The first round contest will take place at SHHS tomorrow at 4:30 p.m. The winner of this game will most likely host 12th-seeded Cedar Creek. The Lady Cougars will host Montgomery tomorrow at 5 p.m. The Lady Wolves of MHS are not that strong and Cedar Creek has a great chance of pulling off the win.
A win for SHHS in the second round moves them to Sulphur. They would most likely meet fourth-seeded Mangham in the quarter-finals. However, the Lady Dragons would have to get by St. Ed’s or South Cameron first to make it to Sulphur.
The State Tournament will begin May 2, and play out through the following Saturday.
