Lady Trojans pull off pair of league wins
The Sacred Heart Lady Trojans cruised by the Lady Gators of False River and the Lady Hornets of Catholic High of Point Coupee to improve to 2-1 in District 5-1A. It was an impressive performance as the local girls bounced back after a loss to North Central.
The Lady Trojans defeated False River 56-30 in front of the Sacred Heart crowd. The Lady Trojans went up 15-7 in the first period. Heather Johnson buried a three-point bomb and the ball was rolling. Catherine Poche capped the period with five points and she led the group in rebounds. Poche went on to finish the night with six points.
The second period was about the SHHS defense. They were stubborn and held FRA to just eight points for the second straight period. Offensively, Sacred Heart did not hold back. SHHS Head Coach Stephanie Fontenot saw her girls improve to a 28-15. Anna Marie Soileau knocked down five points and Courtney Cloud added two buckets of her own. Cloud led the Lady Trojans on offense with 11 points.
The 13 point lead was increased in the third period as Sacred Heart piled up the momentum. Heather Johnson added four points and forced a pair of turnovers. The defense stood firm again, as Poche was big on the boards.
The Lady Trojans took a 38-18 lead into the final period. Several players came off the bench and put some points on the board for the local girls. All in all Sacred Heart scored 18 points, while holding FRA to only 12 points. Johnson buried a three pointer and Kara Aguillard added three points. Anne Marie Soileau ended her night with seven digits.
Sacred Heart went to New Roads to meet the Lady Hornets of Catholic High School of Point Coupee (CHSPC). They walked all over the home team with a score of 64-23.
Sacred Heart put up 12 points to begin the game. Poche led the charge with eight points in the period. She led the team with 18 points overall. Sacred Heart’s defense continued to be strong, holding the Lady Hornets to just two points.
In the second period, CHSPC improved their status and scored eight points. However, the Lady Trojans doubled the output of the home team with eight points. Heather Johnson hit a long range shot for three points, while Poche added four of her own. Gabbie Andrepont also chipped in with a trio of points. Sacred Heart took a 28-10 lead into the locker room at the halfway point.
In the third period, Sacred Heart did not let up. They added 22 points to their lead. Nine different Lady Trojans scored in the period. Poche added six more points to her account and Heather Fontenot dropped four points. Andrepont hit another three points in the frame and finished her night with eight points.
In the final period, SHHS dropped 14 more points. Heather Fontenot led the charge with six points. She was good for 12 points in the game.
The Lady Trojans hit the road again tomorrow night. They will face the Lady Cougars of Point Coupee Central in Morganza.
