Lady Trojans remain in district title contention
Going into the game against the St. Edmund Lady Jays on Friday, the Sacred Heart Lady Trojans were only one game out of first place in district 5-1A. Head Coach Stephanie Fontenot and the Lady Trojans knew that a road win over the Lady Blue Jays would be crucial to stay in the district championship race.
Sacred Heart used this knowledge as motivation to forge a 40-24 victory over St. Edmund and run their district record to 3-1.
As the game started, the Lady Trojans would be without a key player. Starting forward Catherine Poche could not play due to injured knees. This fact did not snuff out Sacred Heart’s determination, and it showed from the opening tipoff.
The Lady Trojans came out in the first quarter and took control of the game, outscoring the Lady Blue Jays 12-6 in the period.
The momentum carried over into the second period, with Sacred Heart stretching their lead to 19-11 before the first half buzzer sounded.
A shaky third quarter allowed St. Edmund to close the gap slightly. The Lady Blue Jays outpaced Sacred Heart 6-5 in the period to cut the lead to 24-17.
However, the Lady Trojans managed to break the game open in the final stanza. Sacred Heart, with some much need offense and a controlling defense, outscored the Lady Blue Jays 16-7 to close out the win.
Leading the charge for the Lady Trojans was Gabby Andrepont, who popped the nets for 11 points. Andrepont also led all rebounders with 13 boards. Erin Fontenot finished with six steals on the night.
Sacred Heart will host North Central on Tuesday in a much-needed win. If the Lady Trojans can upset the Lady Hurricanes, the teams would be tied for first place in district with only three games remaining.
