Lady Trojans run by Lady Gators
The Sacred Heart Lady Trojans went to Youngsville to take on the Class 1A Lady Gators of Ascension Episcopal. The two 1A teams squared off and made a good game of it. A tremendous opening period helped the SHHS girls take a commanding lead and stay in control throughout the game.
SHHS got a big first period from Same Ardoin and Catherine Poche. Ardoin hit a three-point bomb and Poche popped the net for back to back shots. Mid-way through the period, Heather Fontenot punished the net for a pair of three-point shots. That gave the local girls a 17-9 lead as the opening frame disappeared.
In the second period. the Lady Gators scored another nine points, while SHHS rattled off 12 more points. Heather Johnson sent a pair of shots through the net from long distances for six points. She went on to hit four three-point shots in the game and lead all SHHS players with 17 points. Johnson and Natalie Earles teamed up on defense to force several turnovers and keep the momentum on the side of the SHHS girls.
At the mid-way point, Sacred Heart held a commanding 29-18 lead. In the second half, SHHS Head Coach Stephanie Fontenot kept the pressure on. Her talented squad hit 14 points, despite a valiant effort from the girls of AES. The Lady Gators came out strong on the shooting of Sarah Seagos and Sarah Beasle. The duo combined for 12 points in the third period. Beasle led the team with 14 points overall. She hit a pair of three-point buckets in the period.
Courtney Cloud fired back for the Lady Trojans. She sank six points in the third period and was big on defense with a ton of rebounds. Her defense helped SHHS keep the lead going into the final period.
AES out-scored the local girls 14-11 in the final period, but their comeback attempt would not be successful. Johnson ripped off seven points in the final block. Her shooting combined with her speed kept her squad on top. Earles and Cloud combined for a pair of steals, which switched the momentum away from the Lady Gators’ effort.
Poche finished the night with eight points as Sacred Heart went on the win.
