Lady Trojans run past St. Ed’s in district contest

A tight game became a runaway for the Sacred Heart Lady Trojans on Tuesday afternoon in Eunice. The Lady Trojans blew open a 4-2 game, scoring nine runs in the top of the seventh, to take a 13-5 win over the St. Ed’s Lady Blue Jays. The win pushes Sacred Heart’s record to 11-7 on the year and 1-2 in district.
The first inning was a scoreless one for both squads. The Lady Trojans managed to push across three runs in the top of the second. Hannah Lemoine struck out to lead off the inning. Sydney Fontenot then singled to left field. The Lady Jays recorded the second out when Erin Fontenot struck out. Sarah Soileau singled to put runners at first and second with two away. A single by Elizabeth Soileau drove in Fontenot and put runners at first and second once again. Courtney Vidrine then took a 1-2 pitch and doubled to left field plating Soileau and Fontenot, who was courtesy running for Elizabeth Soileau. Gabbie Andrepont grounded out to third base for the final out.
Neither team could push runs across in the middle three innings. Sacred Heart added another run in the top of the sixth inning. Caroline Fontenot led off with a single to left field. Two stolen bases and two outs later, Fontenot scored on an error by the first baseman with Erin Fontenot at the plate. Sarah Soileau grounded out to third to end the inning.
St. Ed’s brought the game a little closer by scoring their first two runs in the bottom of the sixth. The Lady Jays used a combination of two singles, a walk and two stolen bases to cut into the Lady Trojan lead. At the end of six completed innings, Sacred Heart held a 4-2 lead.
Like a tsunami crashing onto shore, Sacred Heart flooded the field with runs in the top of the seventh inning. The Lady Trojans had a total of 14 plate appearances in the inning that produced a total of nine runs. Four Sacred Heart players batted twice in the inning. The Lady Trojans totaled five hits, including home runs by Andrepont and Erin Fontenot. Sacred Heart also drew four walks in the inning. By the time it was all said and done the Lady Trojans now led 13-2.
St. Ed’s tried to mount something that resembled a comeback attempt in the bottom of the seventh. The Lady Jays did manage to score three runs in the inning to make the score a little more respectable. However, Sacred Heart pitcher Elizabeth Soileau quickly quelled the St. Ed’s momentum.
In the game, the Lady Trojans had four players with multiple hits, led by Elizabeth Soileau, who was three for four, including a double and three runs batted in. Andrepont went three for five with a home run, a double and three runs batted in. Vidrine went two for five, including a double and two runs batted in. Sydney Fontenot was two for four, scoring two runs and recording two runs batted in.
On the mound, Elizabeth Soileau pitched a complete game, surrendering five runs on 10 hits. Soileau struck out six and walked one in picking up the win.
