Lady Trojans suffer loss to Lady Eagles Monday

The Sacred Heart Lady Trojans dug themselves a hole in the first quarter that they could not overcome in a 52-31 loss at home to the Vermilion Catholic Lady Eagles on Monday night. Vermilion Catholic used a 16 point advantage in the opening period and never looked back. Sacred Heart drops to 6-8 on the season with the loss. The Lady Trojans will next host St. Joseph of Plaucheville on January 2nd.
The Lady Eagles jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the first quarter before Sacred Heart put points up on the scoreboard. Vermilion Catholic reeled off the next 14 points in the period. It wasn’t until Catherine Poche scored with 19 seconds left that the Lady Trojans were able to put up their next points. The quarter ended with Vermilion Catholic leading 20-4.
Poor Sacred Heart shooting and defensive pressure from the Lady Eagles told the story of the second quarter. The Lady Trojans did not break the double digit mark until the clock showed 1:47 left in the half. The Lady Eagles were able to extend their lead to 31-11 as the second period came to a close.
The third quarter began with both teams exchanging baskets. Vermilion Catholic took control of the period, going on an 11 point run mid-way through the quarter and lead 46-15 with 3:19 left. Sacred Heart did score seven of the last nine points to trail 46-22 as the period ended. The bright spot for the Lady Trojans in the quarter was Hannah Lemoine, who netted seven points.
Sacred Heart continued to attack in the fourth quarter. The Lady Trojans were able to score nine points in the period; however, the Lady Eagles knocked in six points to finish the contest. The second half was played a lot cleaner than the first half, as both teams only committed 10 team fouls combined.
The Lady Trojans were led by Lemoine who netted seven points. Natalie Earles and Poche each chipped in six points for Sacred Heart in the loss. Poche led all rebounders with 10 boards. The Lady Trojans shot 20 percent from the field and 28 percent from the charity stripe. Sacred Heart turned the ball over 23 times in the game.
