Lady Trojans suffer second district loss
For the second time in a three-day span the Sacred Heart Lady Trojans have dropped a district contest to the Catholic of Pointe Coupee Lady Hornets. On Tuesday, the Lady Trojans fell to Catholic 4-1 in New Roads. On Thursday, the Lady Hornets came to Ville Platte and took a 7-3 win over Sacred Heart. With the loss on Thursday, the Lady Trojans fall to 8-6 on the season and 0-2 in district play.
Sacred Heart started slow on defense, allowing four Catholic runs in the top of the first inning. The Lady Hornets’ first three batters singled to score the first run. In fact, Catholic had six base hits in the inning, including a double, to help plate their runs.
The Lady Trojans cut the lead in half in the bottom of the inning. Elizabeth Soileau drew a leadoff walk. Courtney Vidrine then reached on an error by the pitcher, which advanced Sarah Soileau, who was courtesy running for Elizabeth Soileau. A second error, this time by the third baseman, put Gabbie Andrepont on first base and moved up Vidrine. Sarah Soileau was out at third on the play.
With runners at first and second, Kara Aguillard doubled to left field to score Vidrine and Andrepont. Caroline Fontenot struck out for the second out of the inning. Laura Beth Fontenot reached on an error, advancing Aguillard. Hannah Lemoine lined out to short stop to end the scoring.
Catholic scored two more runs in the top of the fourth to extend their lead to 6-2. Another Lady Hornet run in the top of the fifth extended the advantage to five runs. Sacred Heart did manage another run in the bottom of the sixth. With one out, Fontenot doubled to center field. Laura Beth Fontenot reached on an error by the shortstop, moving Fontenot to third base. A ground ball by Hannah Lemoine scored Fontenot on the fielder’s choice. Logan Shipp then grounded out to the pitcher for the final out. The Lady Trojans could not mount any offense in the final inning.
Elizabeth Soileau took the loss on the mound. Soileau threw seven innings, allowing 10 hits while striking out one and walking one. Kara Aguillard led all Sacred Heart hitters, going one for three with two runs batted in.
