Mamou Demons slip past Lake Arthur Tigers
When the Mamou Demons traveled to Lake Arthur on Thursday, they knew one important fact; this was a must win if they were to keep their playoff hopes alive. The Green Demons came into the key 4-2A district game ranked number 36 in the current power ratings. Mamou needs to be in the top 32 teams to make the playoffs in two weeks. The Demons trailed at the end of the third quarter, but forged a comeback to take the most important win 43-36.
Mamou opened the game like someone who knew what their mission was. The Demons got going offensively right away, thanks to Toby Ortego and Mack Thomas. The duo combined for 16 points in the first period, which included five three-point baskets. Mamou used that to their advantage and led 18-7 at the end of one quarter of play.
The hot hands of the first quarter turned ice cold in the second quarter. The Demons were only able to muster three points in the entire second period. Lake Arthur was able to knock down 11 points to trail Mamou by three as the first half came to a close.
Coming out of the locker room, the Tigers carried the momentum they had into the third quarter. Lake Arthur increased their offensive output by netting 16 points in the period. Mamou managed to drop in 11 points in the stanza. However, the Demons trailed the Tigers 34-32 as the third quarter ended.
Mamou needed to jump start their defense and slow down the Lake Arthur offensive attack. The Demons ramped up the defensive pressure and held the Tigers to only two points in the final stanza. Mamou was only able to add nine points to their total score, but it was enough to seal the victory.
Ortego and Thomas led the Demons in scoring, each netting 15 points. Mamou is now 10-17 on the year and 5-4 in district play.
The Demons will finish out the regular season on Saturday as they travel to take on the Kinder Yellow Jackets in a key district match up. This is another must win game for Mamou if they expect to be in the top 32 come playoff time.
