For the Mamou Demons (0-7, 0-2), the road does not get any easier in 2015. Mamou will travel this week to take on an undefeated Welsh Greyhound team that has scored more than 45 points every game this season.
And, like Mamou, when you are struggling just to find players to fill in for the injuries that seem to keep mounting, it seems like you are just trying to keep your head above water.
“The injury bug is still biting us,” said Mamou head coach Brian Brumfield. “We lost another starter against Kinder this past week. We have to rely on younger players to fill the gaps from injuries. It is tough, especially when you don’t have the numbers.”
Welsh is averaging 54.7 points per game and have outscored their opponents 383-101 in seven games. The Greyhound offense has produced 50 or more points in five games this season.
So how does Brumfield and the Demon coaching staff hope to reign in the Welsh offense?
“That is a great question,” stated Brumfield. “Those guys are good. We are going to have to be fundamentally sound. We need to execute our game plan to perfection. If we can just slow them down, hopefully our offense can put some points on the board and make it close to give ourselves a chance at the end of the game.”
The Mamou Demons have not fared well on the offensive side of the ball this season, mainly because the rash of injuries has not allowed players to get a bunch of playing time.
However, Joab Perron, the junior running back has provided a bright light for the Demon offense.
Last week, Perron collected 107 yards on 13 carries and one touchdown in another yeoman like effort.
Sophomore Jaylen Griffith bursted on the scene in last week’s loss. The sophomore rushed for 128 yards on four carries and scored twice.
