MAMOU-- A late fourth quarter rally from the Mamou Demons was not enough to overcome a 22 point deficit over the Vinton Lions in a 42-29 loss.
Mamou finishes the season winless and is 14-56 over the last seven years. Despite the disparity in the wins versus loses column, Mamou head coach Brian Brumfield is optimistic for the upcoming years.
“We have had to play a number of underclassmen this past season.” said Brumfield. “Those guys grew up a lot. I think that with the bulk of our team coming back, we will be ready for next season. The only thing that will have to be addressed is depth. I hope we get other players out in the off season.”
Against Vinton Friday night, the Demons came out like a team ready to take their first win of the season. Mamou struck first on a 99 yard pass from Darius Tezeno to Lil Paul Williams. Williams nailed the extra point and the Demons held a quick 7-0 lead.
Vinton responded in a huge way to the early Mamou score. The Lions scored the next 28 points in the first half to take a 28-7 lead into the locker room.
Vinton looked to put the game away early in the third quarter. The Lions added seven more points on a 46-yard touchdown run, making the score 35-7.
Mamou answered when Tezeno strolled in the end zone from eight yards out. The extra point was no good.
However, the Demons had cut the lead to 35-13. Mamou continued their comeback effort in the fourth quarter. The Demons scored twice in the period. Tezeno connected once again to Williams, this time from 33-yards out to add to the Mamou total. The two-point conversion was good and Mamou now found themselves only down 35-21.
The Demons added another score in the final period when Thomas Atkins jaunted from 30-yards out. Another successful two-point conversion had now pulled Mamou to within six points, 35-29.
Unfortunately, for the Demons, Vinton was able to close the door on Mamou when the Lions scored on a 12-yard run late in the game to close out the victory.
