A new season and a new offensive coordinator will be giving the Mamou Green Demons a new focus on offense in 2015.
Last season, the Demons featured a quick spread-style offense with a lot of passing. This season, senior Joab Perron’s feet will be doing the majority of the workload for Mamou.
“We’ll still throw the ball around,” head coach Brian Brumfield explained, “but we’re definitely going to be focusing on power running.”
The featured back in the new system will be Perron.
“He’s a very good all-round back,” described Brumfield. “He can catch the ball and he definitely has great speed.”
But, the second-year head coach said, “he’s not shifty. He’s a power runner. He will not shy away from a hit. He’ll take a lick, but he’ll also give a lick, too.”
That’s the kind of running that has Brumfield excited.
“We want to line up and get three or four yards per play,” he said, “and move the chains down the field. When you need to score, you’ve got to be able to run the ball. That’s why we’re putting more emphasis on the ground game.”
Meanwhile, the Demons are still looking to cement someone in the role of quarterback. Brumfield said that he’s looking at three signal callers, who “all look pretty good,” but who are still in the process of trying to separate themselves from the pack.
Opening up the holes on the line, Brumfield is counting on two linemen with experience, Kendrick Williams and Dakota Fruge. The pair play on opposite sides of the line from each other, acting as anchors on each side of the ball.
“I thought about having them play together on the same side,” Brumfield explained, “but I think that their experience will help to stabilize the other new linemen next to them.”
