Mamou Lady Demons blow by Lady Bobcats in opener

EUNICE -- After a 22-9 season and a playoff appearance a year ago, the Mamou Lady Demons looked to carry that experience into the new year.
Mamou accomplished that Monday night, as the Lady Demons rolled into Eunice and came away with an impressive 69-38 drumming of the Lady Bobcats.
The game started with a flurry from the Lady Demons that did not relinquish for most of the entire game. Mamou used an oppressive defense and accurate shooting from Darelzray Bellard to open a 15-3 lead at the 2:51 mark of the opening quarter.
Mamou utilized a full court press to create several turnovers, leading to easy buckets. The Lady Demons ended the quarter with two three-point baskets from Kazhana Richard to extend their lead to 23-5 as the opening quarter came to a close.
Bellard added nine points, all on three-point baskets in the period.
The second quarter was filled with a number of miscues from both teams. Mamou turned the ball over on several occasions, while Eunice could not find the basket, even on break away layups.
Eunice did manage to break into the double digit column at the 1:07 mark. However, the damage had been done, as Mamou took a 37-11 advantage into the locker room.
The Lady Bobcats came out more aggressive in the second half, but could not break through the Mamou defense.
The Lady Demon defensive pressure resulted in quick baskets that pushed the lead to 61-25 as the third quarter buzzer sounded.
With Mamou in total control, Temple began substituting in the fourth quarter. Running time began in the final period and Mamou finished the game with the 31 point win.
Richard led all Lady Demon scorers with 27 points. Bellard added 20 more points in the win.
Mamou (1-0) will host Port Barre in their home opener tonight. Game time is set for 6 p.m.
