Mamou looks for first district win Friday

The Mamou Demons are now 1-4 on the season and 0-1 in district play as they lost to Dequincy this past Friday by the score of 40-0. The Demons are now hoping to get back in the win column as they travel to Welsh this Friday. Mamou has now lost four games in a row but with a win they still keep their playoff hopes alive. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
The Demon offense was able to move the ball at times. Mamou penetrated to Tiger territory three times in the first half, getting to the opponent’s 34, 30 and 10 yard line. However, what has become the theme of the season for the Mamou offense, the Demons were unable to capitalize and come away with points. The second half of the game mirrored the first half. Mamou continued to move the ball but still could not punch the ball into the end zone.
“We moved the ball pretty decently on the ground,” stated Mamou Head Coach Brian Brumfield. “Not having Dylan Duplechin able to play hurt us a little in the passing game. I’m not saying that Robbie did a bad job. In fact I thought he did a good job. It’s just that Robbie has only had about 30 percent of the snaps at practice. This caused some timing issues with the receivers. It is something that is very fixable.”
Defensively, the Demons could not hold the Tiger offense. DeQuincy put up three touchdowns in the first half and matched that output in the second half. Once again it was big plays that wound up hurting Mamou the most.
“I did not think we were completely focused on defense,” said Brumfield. “We had a number of miscues and missed assignments on the defensive side of the ball. They were also a lot more physical than we expected. Their best back was able to play and he really ran the ball hard.”
Mamou will now face the Welsh Greyhounds for their second district game. Welsh comes into the game sporting a 4-2 overall record and a 1-0 record in district. Last week the Greyhounds defeated district foe Vinton High School by the score of 30-12.
“Welsh is a very good football team,” exclaimed Brumfield. “They are very physical on both sides of the ball. They run the split back veer to perfection. Welsh is extremely disciplined and well balanced. They fly to the ball on defense. We are going to have to play disciplined football and hopefully get the passing game to gel.”
If the Demons wish to enter the playoffs at the end of the season, this is almost a must win. With only four games left in the season, time is running out on Mamou. Power points are now at a premium and only wins can garner the amount of power points that can propel the Demons into the post season.
