Mamou loses district game against Welsh
The Mamou Green Demons were looking to stay on track in district play Tuesday as they travelled to take on the Welsh Greyhounds. Mamou came into the game with a 1-0 district record having to face the number five ranked Greyhounds. Welsh also sported a 1-0 record in district. The Demons gave a valiant effort, but could not keep pace and took the 78-48 loss.
Mamou came out in the first quarter like a team ready to play. The Demons were able to stay ahead of the Greyhounds in the period. With a good offensive performance, Mamou took the 18-15 lead as the quarter ended.
The second stanza was not very kind to the Demons. Welsh showed why they are one of the top ranked teams in class 2A, as they took control of the game. The Greyhounds scorched the nets for 34 points, while holding Mamou to only five points in the period. At the end of the first half, Welsh had widened their margin to 49-23.
In order for the Demons to get back into the game, they would have to do a better job offensively as the second half began. Mamou did accomplish that feat by rattling the iron for 16 points. However, Welsh was equally as good on offense, adding 20 more points in the quarter. The Greyhounds now held a 69-39 lead as the third period came to a close.
The fourth stanza wound up a stalemate between the clubs. Both Mamou and Welsh could only managed nine points in the period, as the Greyhounds sustained their 30 point advantage. Leading scorers for the Demons were Lil Paul Williams and Trey Wilson, who netted 12 and 10 points respectively.
With the loss Mamou drops to 6-14 on the season and 1-1 in district play. The Demons will return to action on Friday as they travel to Vinton in a district 4-2A matchup.
