MAMOU -- It was a different week but the same result for Mamou as they lost at home to Oakdale 52-13 on Thursday night.
“The kids play hard, but that’s the story of this year,” said coach Brian Brumfield. “The problem is giving up the big plays but we don’t know how to correct it. We preach, and we talk don’t give up the big play. We were in the ball game early, but we just can’t afford to have those penalties and give up those big plays.”
Trailing 7-0 late in the first quarter, Mamou (0-5) recovered a fumble and had the ball on the 35-yard line. After a five-yard pass from Demon quarterback Levi Fontenot to Ronnie McBride, running back Joab Perron rushed down the right side, leapt over defenders and raced toward the end zone.
McBride began the second quarter taking a direct snap out of the shotgun formation and found his way into the end zone for a touchdown. The extra point attempt was good as Mamou tied the game up at 7-7 with 11:20 left on the clock in the second quarter.
After the Demons forced the Warriors to punt, Mamou handed the ball back as Perron had the ball stripped away and it was recovered by Oakdale’s Jonathan Johnson giving the Warriors possession on its own five-yard line. Oakdale’s James Evins then ran into the end zone for his second of five touchdowns of the night.
At the half Oakdale led 19-7.
Both teams jockeyed for position in the third quarter, but neither team could break through as their drives stalled on either penalties or turnovers. Late in the third quarter Oakdale capitalized on a Mamou punt that went a total of two yards, as the Warriors moments later added to its lead.
Mamou scored on the ensuing kickoff, as Jaylen Griffith sprinted 56-yards down the field for a touchdown but that would the final score for the Demons.
The special team woes continued in the fourth quarter for Mamou with another punt, this time only traveling one yard. This time Oakdale (2-3) capitalized for a touchdown by Terrance Holmes, and then returned a fumble recovery for the game’s final score.
In the game, Mamouhad 183 yards of total offense, 91 of those yards coming on the ground. Leading the way in the rushing department was Perron, who picked up 73 yards on 11 carries.
Mamou begins district play next week with a Thursday night trip to Lake Arthur.
