Mamou opens district play against DeQuincy
The Mamou Green Demons are now 1-4 on the season, having dropped another game against Montgomery last Thursday by a score of 33-12. However, the opening of district 4-2A competition brings a new season. The Demons are hoping to get back into the win column this Friday as they host the DeQuincy Tigers. It is anybody’s district championship to win. With a victory, Mamou would be one step closer toward that goal. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
“Overall, I thought our kids played well,” stated Mamou Head Coach Brian Brumfield. “They played hard. Montgomery was a well coached team. We are still trying to learn how to finish drives and finish games. It doesn’t happen overnight. It is a mind set that has to develop.”
Against Montgomery on Thursday, the Demon offense got off to a good start, scoring the first points of the game. Overall, Mamou moved the ball, especially through the air. The Demons collected 295 yards of offense on 55 plays, with 182 yards of that total coming via the pass. Mamou was also able to move the chains 12 times for first downs. Dylan Duplechin led the Demon offense throwing for 167 yards on 13 completions. Nathaniel Holland had six catches for 113 yards to lead all Mamou receivers.
“Offensively, we move the ball really well,” said Brumfield. “We had the ball inside their 10 yard line three times and did not put points on the board. Turnovers and penalties stalled drives that should have resulted in points. Other than that I was really pleased with the way the offense moved the ball.”
The Demon defense had a tough time controlling the Tiger offense. Montgomery scored four times in a row and accumulated 315 total yards. Most of the damage done by the Tigers came through the air. Montgomery was able to rack up 184 passing yards on only six completions.
“I thought we played well on defense,” commented Brumfield. “We just gave up too many big plays. We had some busted assignments. They came out in different formations and motioned a lot. I think it confused some of our guys. We need to learn how to make adjustments in the game.”
Mamou will now host the DeQuincy Tigers in the district opener for both teams. DeQuincy comes to Demon land sporting a 2-3 record. The Tigers were defeated last week, as the Oakdale Warriors took the 28-20 victory. Both Mamou and DeQuincy have a common opponent in South Cameron. The Tigers took a 28-0 victory over the Tarpons in week three, while the Demons beat South Cameron 33-7 in week two.
“DeQuincy is very similar to Vinton. They like to spread the offense until they get inside the red zone, then they will go to a two tight end formation. Their running back is a really big kid and he runs hard. They are very physical on defense and fly to the ball. They run multiple sets on defense. We are going to have to work hard this week on recognizing the defense so we do not miss assignments. It will be a good game.”
Success against DeQuincy will depend on the Demons’ ability to put up points. Mamou has the capability of scoring; they just need to be able to sustain drives. The Demon defense will have to come to play if they wish to walk away 1-0 in district. When it comes to district play, the records do not really matter. Winning the district would guarantee a playoff spot for the Demons.
