Mamou, Pine Prairie host in first round

Mamou is coming off of a great regular season. They won District 4-2A and they did it with a perfect undefeated record. Pine Prairie competed in their first year in Class 3A and finished in a three-way tie for first place in District 5-3A. Both teams have clinched home games in the first round of the playoffs, which are scheduled to begin this week.
Mamou ended their season with a 10-0 record in league play and an overall record of 17-7. They end the regular season on a five game win streak with an 8-2 win over DeRidder and a 3-0 win over Class C Powerhouse Hackberry.
Now the Lady Demons, seeded 10th in Class 2A, will host the Lady Panthers of Sterlington. The 22nd seeded SHS girls are never a pushover and will be tough.
Sterlington ends the season with an 8-18 overall record and a District 2-2A record of 3-3. If numbers mean anything going into this game for Mamou, they could look at two facts: Sterlington lost to Sacred Heart 11-1 and Mamou beat SHHS 10-0 to open the season. Sterlington also got beat by Hackberry 4-0 earlier in the year. The Lady Panthers are coming off of a 5-2 win over Cedar Creek.
The winner of this game will most likely see a road trip to Fisher High School in the second round. Fisher, the sixth seed, will host Episcopal of Baton Rouge in the first round. The Lady Knights are the 27th seed overall in Class 2A.
Mamou lost in the second round of the playoffs last season to eventual state champion John Curtis 3-0. John Curtis is now in Class 3A. Oak Grove is the top seed in Class 2A this season.
Mamou and Sterlington meet Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. in Mamou.
Pine Prairie (19-7/8-2) ended their season with a big 13-11 win over the Lady Trojans of Sacred Heart. Legendary Head Coach Carolyn Deville is hoping that will be enough to propel the Lady Panthers back to the State Tournament in their first year in Class 3A. The last time Pine Prairie moved up in Class was when they went from Class B to Class 2A. They won the state championship that year over South Beauregard.
This season, the 15th seeded Lady Panthers will host Caldwell High School in the first around. The 18th seeded Spartans come to Pine Prairie with a record of 14-16 and 5-5 in District 3-3A. The duo will collide Tuesday at 5 p.m.
Both teams are rolling on a five game win streak, which should make for a good game. Pine Prairie will have the benefit of a strong home crowd and several players that were on the team last year that fell 3-1 in the Class 2A quarterfinals to North Webster.
The winner of the game will face No. 2 Kaplan in the next round. If the Lady Panthers win, they will travel to Kaplan to meet the Lady Pirates. If Caldwell wins, Kaplan would go to Caldwell High School in north Louisiana.
