Mamou Pitching Machine All-Stars take district
In Mamou, several teams collided last weekend in Mamou in order to earn a good seed in the Pitching Machine District Tournament, which will take place this weekend in DeQuincy. Of those teams, Mamou was the team from east sub-district that earned a first place seed. Ville Platte and Pine Prairie each earned seeds as well and will play this weekend in DeQuincy.
Mamou won their first game 14-1 over Oberlin. M.J. Kilbarger led the team, going 3-3 and scoring three times as the team leadoff hitter. Peyton Berzas and Gavin Lafleur were also 3-3 and scored twice. Briggs Ardoin, Calliou Thibodeaux, Tavon Deville and A.J. Arvie also got mulitple hits in the game.
Alex Dick and Ethan Soileau provided good defense and each banged out a pair of hits and Gavin Jack scored late in the game.
Mamou’s winning ways kept on going in game two. They defeated Moss Bluff 9-0. Mamou blasted out four runs in the first inning and then returned to play awesome defense. They allowed just two runners to reach base all game long.
On offense, Lafleur, Kilbarger, Berzas and Ardoin were each 2-2 at the plate. Berzas and Ardoin scored two times for Mamou. Dez Skinner and Brady Fontenot each helped to get Mamou going as the game rolled on with key plays.
Mamou capped the game with four runs in the third inning.
The little guys from Mamou met their northern neighbors in their third contest of the tournament. Pine Prairie suffered a 15-0 loss to Mamou. For the second game in a row, Mamou’s defesnsive power kept their opponent off the score board.
Mamou scored seven runs in their first trip to the plate and got eight more runs in the second frame. Mamou hit a total of 16 hits in the game. Kilbarger, Lafleur, Berzas, Ardion, Thibodeaux, Arvie, Jack and Soileau were each 2-2 at the plate.
Mamou had to battle against a tough Oakdale team in their fourth game. The local boys went up early. They were up 7-0 after two trips to the plate.
Kilbarger, Lafleur Berzas and Deville started off the game with singles and each scored in the first inning. In the second frame, Gavin Jack, Brady Fontenot and Kilbarger each hit and scored to keep their team rolling.
Oakdale fired back late in the game with seven runs. Mamou had to keep pace and scored right along with their opponent. Ethan Soileau went 3-3 and scored twice late in the game.
Berzas, Kilbarger, Lafleur, Ardoin and Arvie were each 3-3 on the day.
Mamou and Ville Platte collided for top seed in the final game of the tournament. Mamou struck first in the top of the first inning. Gavin Lafleur singled and scored in the first inning to put Mamou up 1-0. Lafleur would score three times on the day and go 3-3 at the plate.
Ville Platte took the lead in the second inning. They scored three runs on a series of hits. Gavin Soileau, Ike Perry and Kohen Joubert crossed the dish for VP.
In the top of the third block, Mamou answered with three runs of their own. Lafleur got things going with one out. One out later, Briggs Ardoin and Calliou Thibodeaux each singled and crossed the plate, giving Mamou a one-run edge.
Ville Platte would not be outdone. They scored three more runs in the bottom of the third inning. Landon LeBlanc, Wade Pitre and Parker Feucht each singled and scored, making it a 6-4 contest.
Mamou returned to the plate in the top of the fourth block. Ethan Soileau and Gavin Jack each singled and scored to tie the game at 6-6. That seemed to spark the Mamou defense as they held the VP offense scoreless in the bottom of the inning.
Then the Mamou offense exploded in the fifth inning. They scored five runs, sweeping away any momentum that VP was trying to build. Lafleur started things out with a single and from there the boys knocked out seven more hits.
Briggs Ardoin and Ethan Soileau were also 3-3 at the plate. Gavin Soileau led Ville Platte with a 2-2 performance at the plate.
