When good teams battle on the court, especially two long time parish rivals, every fan expects the contest to be a thriller to the end.
No one walked away without that feeling after the Mamou Lady Demons and the Ville Platte Lady Bulldogs went toe-to-toe for third place at the Northwest Holiday Tournament this past Tuesday.
It took all four quarters, but the Lady Demons were able to come away with a hard fought 48-46 win over their cross-parish rivals.
From the tip it looked as if Mamou would run away with the win. The Lady Demons came out on fire hitting six baskets, including two three-pointers from Darelzeray Bellard to take a 14-6 lead over the Lady Bulldogs as the first quarter came to a close.
But, as good teams always do, Ville Platte willed their way back into the ball game in the second quarter.
The Lady Bulldogs turned up the heat defensively against the Lady Demons and held Mamou to only five total points in the quarter, to take a 20-19 lead into the locker room.
The third and fourth quarters were as tight as can be, with Mamou edging Ville Platte by two points in the thrid quarter and only one point in the fouth quarter to take the win. The fourth quarter was a scoring feast for both teams as Mamou outpaced Ville Platte 20-19.
Bellard and Kiajah Wilson led all Mamou players with 14 points.
Keolagah Calvin and Miya McKinney were high scorers for Ville Platte with 12 apiece.
