Mamou shows offensive power against Tarpons
The Mamou Green Demons came out on fire Friday night and destroyed the South Cameron Tarpons by a score of 33-7. Dylan Duplechain and Daniel Matthews led the way offensively for the Demons. Duplechain would finish the night with nine of 12 passing for 165 yards and one touchdown. Duplechain also rushed for two touchdowns. Matthews would have four carries for 37 yards and two touchdowns. Paul Williams would lead the Demon’s receivers with four catches for 90 yards and a touchdown.
Mamou got the ball to start the game. Matthews ran for eleven yards on the first play. Duplechain found Nathaniel Holland for nine yards. Two consecutive penalties on the Demons put them in a fourth and eight situation at the Tarpon 44 yard line. The punting unit was sent out and the Mamou drive was stalled.
South Cameron’s opening drive would go no better. The Mamou defense only allowed the Tarpons two yards in four plays. South Cameron would turn over possession to the Demons on the punt.
On Mamou’s next possession, the Green Demons would air it out five plays in a row. Duplechain would go five for five on the drive, connecting with four different receivers. Williams would catch two of those passes for 34 yards on the drive. Mamou would have the ball at first and goal from the Tarpon six yard line. Duplechin would plunge into the end zone on the left side of his offensive line. The extra point was good from Nathaniel Holland and Mamou led 7-0 with 3:25 left in the first quarter.
The Demon’s defense would hold strong on South Cameron’s next possession and force the Tarpons to punt. Mamou would waste no time in hitting pay dirt again. A 50 yard pass from Duplechin to Jacob Israel would put Mamou at the Tarpon seven yard line. Two plays later, Daniel Matthews ran the ball in from one yard out. The extra point was good and the Demons led 14-0 with 8:27 left to play in the first half.
Mamou would tack on more points right before the end of the half. Starting at their 43 yard line, Mamou drove 57 yards in five plays. A 19-yard touchdown pass from Duplechain to Williams capped off the drive. The extra point was blocked and the Demons went into half time leading 20-0.
The Demon defense would come out on fire again to start the second half. Mamou stuffed the Tarpon run game, allowing only two yards on three plays. Facing fourth and eight, South Cameron decided to go for the first down. However, Holland would intercept the pass attempt and bring it back 52 yards.
The interception would set up another score for the Demons. Mamou took over possession at the Tarpon eight yard line. Three plays later, Duplechin would score on a three-yard touchdown run. The extra point was good and Mamou led 27-0 with 7:55 left in the third quarter.
The Demon defense would force a three and out on the Tarpons. Mamou would take control of the ball at their 43 yard line. South Cameron would force Mamou to punt, but a roughing the kicker penalty gave the Demons new life. Three consecutive completions from backup quarterback Robbie Deshotel brought the Demons within striking distance of the end zone. On first and 15 from the 19 yard line, Matthews would scamper 19 yards for the Demon score. The extra point was blocked again. Mamou was now up 33-0 over the Tarpons with 2:51 left to go in the quarter. Neither team could get much going on offense after Mamou’s last scoring drive. Both defenses were stingy in holding the opponent to a few yards. The Demons would use this time to give a number of younger players game experience.
South Cameron would finally break though and put up points on the score board. Taking over at their 45 yard line, the Tarpons would run the ball 16 consecutive times. With a first and goal from the two yard line, Blayne Miller would score on a touchdown run with six seconds remain on the game clock. The extra point was good and Mamou would come out victorious by the final score of 39-7.
Mamou Head Coach Brian Brumfield was very excited after the game. “I was impressed with the team’s play,” stated Brumfield. “I thought they fought hard from start to finish, something we did not do the week before. The passing game was on target tonight. I am especially happy for the seniors to be able to get their first win of the season. We will be ready to play next week.”
Mamou (1-1) will travel to inter-parish rival Pine Prairie on Friday night. The Panthers (1-1) are coming off of a 14-0 loss at the hands of East Beauregard. The Demons will need to repeat the fast start against the Panthers if they hope to garner another victory on the young season.
