If anything, the Mamou Demon football season has not been a total loss. Even with an 0-8 record, Mamou has definitely shown their resiliency in one of the toughest districts in the state, regardless of class.
Demon head coach Brian Brumfield acknowledges that his young squad has taken their lumps in 2016, but the attitude and the desire to go out and prove something on the field of play has not waned all season long.
“There has been no quit in this team,” stated Brumfield. “Week in and week out our players come to practice and to the game and give every ounce of effort they can. This team still holds out hope that if we can somehow put a complete game together, good things will come to us.”
Mamou has had some moments in the season where they have shown that they can compete with the cream of the crop. For example, the Demons only trailed 19-7 against Oakdale in week five and trailed 18-14 to East Beauregard late in the fourth quarter before surrendering the winning score.
The main issue for Mamou this year has been the turnovers. The Demons have turned the ball over 26 times in eight games this season. The only game that Mamou did not give up the football was against Welsh last week in a 42-2 loss.
“The turnover issue has been a problem all year,” said Brumfield. “We are just going to continue to work on that aspect of our game and hopefully it resolves itself in the next two games.”
Mamou will take on DeQuincy tomorrow night on the road in hopes of getting that elusive first win of the season. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
DeQuincy is 4-4 on the season and 1-2 in District 4-2A. The Tigers average 27.6 points per game and allow 31.8 points per game.
“DeQuincy is a spread team,” commented Brumfield. “Their run game is not as effective as their passing game. They are very aggressive on the defensive side of the ball, because of the type of defense they run. We just need to get some consistency in our offense and control the ball.”
