Improved play by Mamou this past week almost brought them over the losing hump, as they were within striking distance of East Beauregard in a 26-14 loss.
In that loss Mamou outgained East Beauregard in terms of yardage. The Demons racked up a total of 209 yards of offense to the Trojans 196 yards. Most of the Mamou yardage came through the air as they finished with 185 yards passing.
But, before a win can be obtained, there is an area that needs to be addressed, according to head coach Brian Brumfield. That area is turnovers. The Demons committed four turnovers against the Trojans; two of those led to touchdowns.
“We fumbled the ball on our one-yard line and they just took it in,” stated Brumfield. “And, on top of that, we gave up an interception for a touchdown. We cannot continue to do that and be successful. I thought we played well enough, especially on offense, to come away with the win. But, when you give your opponents points off of turnovers, those wins will be few and far between.”
How the Demons respond will be noticed very quickly, as they have to travel to Oberlin tonight for a night battle against the Tigers. It is a tight turn around, especially for a young squad like Mamou that starts a number of freshmen.
“We will just have to get ready a lot quicker this week,” stated Brumfield. “Our younger players are going to have to learn to be able to get prepared in a shortened amount of time. How we react to the loss of practice time is going to be a big factor in the outcome of the game to night.”
Oberlin is coming off a 41-0 loss to perennial powerhouse Kinder this past week. The Tigers are under new leadership, as former Eunice High assistant, and Oberlin alum, Durrell Pelloquin takes over the reins.
“They are running the Wing-T offense that Eunice has been known for,” commented Brumfield. “It involves a lot of motion and misdirection. We are going to have to be very sound defensively on our assignments and tackle better that we have the last two games if we want to come out with a win.”
